The Southeastern Gay and Lesbian Conference
Common interests could be shared at meetings, conferences and festivals. One of Atlanta’s earliest conferences was the third Southern Gay and Lesbian Conference. The conference faced financial problems as well as internal conflicts.

"In the organizing for the third Southeastern Gay and Lesbian Conference, it was a very tenuous coalition between the lesbians here, who were ALFA-identified. Most of them were separatist, and there were some very articulate women. The women were advocating for women-only workshops on things like lesbian sexuality. These guys were just like, “That’s discrimination. Everything should be open to everybody.” And of course, we had to vote. (laughs) Terry and I voted with the women, which tilted everything, but then all the men walked out."
