Influential Figures through the Years
Adah Patterson
First superintendent of nursing at Grady Hospital and first director of the Grady School of Nursing. Designed the original nursing cap worn by Grady graduates. Patterson served as director from 1896-1899.
Annie Bess Feebeck
Worked as director of nursing services and nursing education for 23 years from 1921 to 1944. A native of Millerbur, Kentucky, Feebeck served as a World War I nurse from 1918 to 1921.
Bernice Dixon
The last administrator at the Grady Hospital School of Nursing before its closing in 1982. Mrs. Dixon served as director of nursing education from1963 – 1982. A Grady Hospital School of Nursing graduate herself, Dixion worked in Grady Hospital as a student nurse and later became a teacher and administrator at the nursing school.
Claire Keane
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Keane served as director of nursing education from 1953 to 1957. Keane went on the found the School of Practical Nursing at Athens General Hospital and was director there from 1962 to 1965.
Dorothy Johnston
Director of nursing education from 1950 to 1952.
Elizabeth McClellan
Director of nursing education from 1952 to 1956.
Frances Louyine Hammett
Director of nursing services and nursing education at Grady Hospital School of Nursing for 16 years, from 1952 -1968. A native of Pell City, Alabama, Hammett served as a World War II Red Cross nurse assigned to a unit in Virginia.
Ludie Clay Andrews
Founder of the Municipal Training School for Colored Nurses at Grady. Mrs. Andrews served as director of Grady Municipal School of Nursing from 1914-1922. Andrews was born in Milledgeville, Georgia. She was the first black nurse to be certified as a registered nurse (RN) in Georgia. Mrs. Andrews sued the Georgia State Board of Nurse Examiners in 1920 to secure the right of black nurses to take the state board examination and become licensed RNs.
Margaret Citrenbaum
Citrenbaum served as Grady School of Nursing Director of Nursing Education from 1957 – 1963 and taught Emory nursing students who trained at Grady.
Nancy Cordelle Wooten
Served as Associate Director at the Grady Hospital School of Nursing from 1949-1951 and as Director from 1951-1952. Throughout her time at Grady Hospital School of Nursing, Mrs. Wooten also served as an instructor, registrar, field director, and financial aid officer.
