This exhibit explores feminist theater in Atlanta. What is feminist theater? Feminist theater is the application of feminist perspectives and analysis in the theater space. It grew out of the wider political theater movement of the 1970’s. Key themes in feminist theater during this time were the lived experiences and hardships of women, a focus on women as subjects rather than objects on stage, the inclusivity of sexualities, and an attempt to overthrow the male gaze in theater. Feminist theater explored social injustices and inequalities in order to identify transformative possibilities and solutions. It acknowledged and disrupted power and oppression based on gender, sex, and sexuality.
