Anti-war activism may have been the catalyst for the founding of The Bird, but the staff and contributors addressed other pressing social concerns from the very beginning of the paper’s run. The first issue included articles on police violence against anti-segregation protestors in Social Circle, GA, and an article criticizing the ouster of Eliza Paschall from the Community Relations Commission, calling it an “underhanded move to sustain racism.” Coverage of these issues as well as of movements addressing other social and political problems were mainstays of the paper over the years.
