LGBTQ Liberation

Great Speckled Bird v. 4 no. 26 (June 28, 1971)

The Bird was an early advocate of LGBTQ+ rights and liberation, publishing articles critical of homophobia in the wider culture and marginalization in the radical community. The paper’s writers spoke out about the need for society to be freed from “repressive fear of sexuality,” and they covered events such as Pride Week at a time when the mainstream press steered clear of the topic. They also offered critical reviews of stereotypical portrayals of LGBTQ+ people in movies and culture, and they reviewed books and other media on LGBTQ+ issues. The Bird also highlighted LGBTQ+ individuals in the arts.
