Johnny Mercer is, of course, known for his songwriting, but he was also an excellent singer as well. Johnny’s career really took off in March of 1932 after he won Paul Whiteman’s “Youth of America” radio contest in New York City. Mercer recorded both his own songs and songs by other songwriters. Three recordings featuring Mercer as a singer (“Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive,” “Candy,” and “On the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe”) reached the No. 1 position on the Hit Parade.
